Event Details
Built during WWII, Vanport was the largest wartime housing project in the United States, During its heyday, it housed approximately 42,000 residents making it the second largest "city" in Oregon. Complete with two-story apartment buildings, a theater, a hospital, five schools, and several shopping and recreation centers it became a model for other war-time housing projects. Many stories were lived in that space nestled between Portland and Vancouver. Most people remember Vanport as the flood of 1948, but it was much more than that.
Come hear Zita Podany's presentation on Vanport, The City that Was. This year will mark 75 years since Vanport disappeared in the flood on May 30, 1948.
If you have family or friends who lived in Vanport, come share their stories with us.
Presentation: 5:30 pm to 6:50 pm
