Program Description

Event Details

Join Dr. Ed Guerrant for a talk surveying the history of seed saving, going back at least 11,000 years, and ending with a short, practical session on seed saving principles and techniques for home gardeners. Based on three decades experience working at a seed bank for rare and endangered plants, Dr. Guerrant will speak on the wide variety of uses to which seed storage facilities have been put in different places and times, and how they might be of critical importance in this time of world ecological disruption and loss of biodiversity.

Dr. Guerrant received his PhD in Botany from the University of California at Berkeley. After four years as a visiting professor at Lewis and Clark College, he became the Conservation Director and Seed Bank Curator at the Berry Botanic Garden, and continued as Director when the seed bank was moved to Portland State University. He has conducted research on seed germination and rare plant reintroduction, as well as writing extensively about sampling seeds for ex situ, or off site plant conservation.
