Program Description

Event Details

On September 3, 2017 fireworks ignited the 19,267 hectare Eagle Creek Fire. In September of 1902, teenagers burning a bees nest started the 200,000 hectare Yacolt Burn.  Both of these fires started along Eagle Creek near Cascade Locks, OR.  Both jumped across the Columbia River. The Eagle Creek Fire burned primarily in Oregon and the Yacolt Fire burned mostly in Washington. The presenter assesses the likelihood of another fire in this area based on the remaining trunks, snags, and other area conditions.

Darold E. Ward, Ph.D. specializes in the development of techniques for measuring smoke emissions from prescribed fires, wildfires, and laboratory fires.  He has published numerous papers regarding the characteristics and amount of smoke from biomass fires and was a major contributor to research on the nuclear winter hypothesis. He has also been a major contributor to global climate change data input regarding emissions from global sources of biomass burning, especially in the tropics.
